I did a feature a while ago for Indesign on Tetsuya's unique cuisine. Have been going through my archive recently and found this shot of one of Tetsuya's degustation menu dishes. I used my multiblitz strobe and bounced the flash with some available room light. I was very pleased with the results.

Sydney Fashion Behind The Scenes

Just wanted to share a few behind the scenes shots of models at the Lisa Maree show which I covered for a corporate client recently. More images from this show can be seen on my website
My brief was to arrive very early and cover the models getting ready. This involved hair and makeup shots, the models backstage getting their last minute alterations done and then covering the actual show. By the time I had finished all the backstage shots I had hardly any time to get into position for the show itself . Fortunately I had a position reserved . However there is never enough room amongst all the other photographers so the lesson is to always be in position as early as possible. Another tip is carry a small torch. Coming from backstage and then rushing across to get a position facing the catwalk is not recommended when you have not had time to change your cameras white balance settings and all the lights have gone out as the show is about to start.

Sir Bob Geldof Sydney Visit

Sir Bob Geldof, Danielle Spencer & Jon Stevens were in Sydney to host a charity concert in aid of disaster response . ANZ and Star City presented the Rock and Rebuild charity concert last month at the Lyric Theatre Star City, headlined by international political activist and pop musician, Sir Bob Geldof. Sir Bob performed past hits along with songs from his new album, How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell. Local music identities Jon Stevens and Danielle Spencer also performed on the night. 100 per cent of income from ticket sales will be donated to both the Queensland Premier's Disaster Relief Fund and The Australian Red Cross to help support communities affected by disasters in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. As a frequent visitor to Australia, New Zealand and Japan, Geldof expressed his commitment to supporting these communities with their rebuild efforts after the recent spate of natural disasters. "To see the extent to which people's lives have been devastated is heart-wrenching," said Sir Bob. "I have experienced the generosity and compassion of the people of Australia, New Zealand and Japan first hand, so it's quite humbling to be invited to lead the Rock and Rebuild effort, and give some support to those nations.". "Long after the cameras shift their focus the people will still be rebuilding their lives. It's important that we keep them in our minds and continue to lend a hand," said Sir Bob.

In memory of Elizabeth Taylor I wanted to share a portrait my father William Lovelace did of Elizabeth Taylor giving Richard Burton a haircut. This was when he was a photojournalist on the Daily Express.
The creation of this photograph came about by my father insisting that he needed to create something different from the standard portrait shot which Richard Burton wanted to do. I remember my father telling me that Richard could be extremely difficult and did not always want to cooperate at the best of times.
He told me that Elizabeth was great and would do anything to help him. My father had a great working relationship with Elizabeth Taylor and she would always go out of her way to help him. On this occasion my father suggested to Elizabeth, " How about giving Richard a haircut?". Elizabeth apparently said to my father "What a great idea!". This was one of many assignments my father did for the Daily Express all over
the world. I will talk about more in later blog posts.

Garden Wall Apartment

The creation of this amazing garden wall apartment was the result of Patrick Blanc's design. Patrick has decorated the sides of buildings in cities around the world with lush gardens since creating his first "green wall" at the Museum of Science and Industry in Paris in 1988. Patrick's inspiration and the plants he chooses come from Asia. His work can be seen at his website, vertical garden.The apartment complex is situated in Camperdown, Sydney. The vertical green strip along the wall is the tallest vertical garden strip in Australia.
This building was a challenge to photograph for Indesign and I had to make several trips to get the correct light falling on the garden wall. For about 10 minutes the light arrived and it was that window of opportunity that allowed me to be able to show the detail and textures of this amazing vertical garden wall. For 10 minutes it was like being in a studio with all the lighting controlled and directed at the exact spot. A photographers dream. Soft diffused lighting with no highlights coming through would have resulted in a very flat image showing no detail and texture of the greenery.

The rise of editorial photography in todays market

There is a good article about the importance of editorial photography and how companies are realising that by using editorial content they can attract consumers. If you go to a photo editor the article is there. I responded to the blog post and here is what example I gave:-
I was commissioned to shoot editorial content for an advertising agency. The client was an international pharmaceutical company.

A new drug had just come out that gave patients with terminal cancer a better quality of life in their last few months. A range of scenarios were presented and it was my job to capture images that would tell the story. For example, one scenario was playing golf and another was having a barbecue in a park. This was all very editorial in style and the client wanted the images for brochures and their website. It perfectly describes how companies want to attract consumers with editorial style content as you mention. The demand for such content can only increase.

The Who in concert from my archive.

Being a fan of The Who, I had to photograph them when they were in concert in Sydney. I was also fortunate to meet and photograph Roger Daltrey some years ago at the Montreux pop festival in Switzerland. It was a rare opportunity as I photographed Roger exclusively so I spent about 20 minutes with him walking around Lake Geneva and photographing him rowing. It was the film days and I was shooting for a London photo agency which no longer exists and where the images are now is anyone's guess. Here are my most recent ones from my arts/entertainment gallery. At present I am in the process of sorting out my editorial archive of stock images and I will be adding many editorial stock images in the next few months. I will also use many of these photographs in my blog features in the coming months.

Flashwave 111 Review.

Recently I got a Flashwave 111 Studio Strobe/Portable Flash Slave Radio 16 Channel Kit. The kit was half price compared to Pocket Wizards. Flashwave cover about 80 meters range and for my purposes that is more than I require. The real test came last week when I had to shoot 100 portraits for a corporate client.
Flashwave worked perfectly with my Multiblitz strobes and what was more impressive was the fact that I could also use my Canon 580 EX11 speedlights as well and all devices worked perfectly in sync with each other. Swan Lake On Ice

A couple of weeks ago I covered the photo call for Swan Lake On Ice in Sydney. All the photographs below were shot at 1600 ISO on a Canon 5D Mark11. The shutter speed was 1/500 sec. We all now take for granted these great advances in digital imaging yet only a few years ago these images would have been full of noise on a pro digital SLR.

Palm Beach is the northernmost suburb of Sydney, less than an hour drive from the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and CBD. It rests on a landmark peninsula and has a unique contrast of lush evergreen bushland and beaches of golden sand, surrounded by the pristine blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Sydney Opera House illuminated

Quite a recent shoot from my archive was the Vivid Sydney festival of light.
The spectacular event featured the lighting of the Sydney Opera House sails. Vivid Sydney brings together large scale light installations and projections, showcasing Sydney as a major creative hub in the Asia-Pacific Region. Exposure was 4.0s at f/5.6 and a great tripod.

Winter Festival at Bondi Beach

Just back from a family holiday in Fiji, I noticed that there was an ice rink at Bondi Beach. I realised that the pictures would be great for stock images and also that magazines in the UK may be interested in running a feature on this. A similar feature I did on the Bondi Icebergs a few years ago was published in Conde Nast Traveller. The aim was to try and show the contrast with the ocean and the ice. As I had nothing to stand high on it was a case of shooting with the camera above my head to try and capture some of the beach & ocean. This was combined with shooting really low down as well to capture the real feeling of skating on ice. All exposure settings were manual. The best images are on my photoshelter galleries page.

Photography Technique: Fill in flash was essential and I pushed up the saturation and contrast in Apple 's great program Aperture.

A client asked me last week to cover the media call for the musical Cats. I have always enjoyed theatre photography and the visual opportunities it presents. I would say that stage photography is a specialist art and to do it well an understanding of the theatre business would certainly be a big asset.One particular scene presented a great combination of colour, costume & mixed lighting where all the ingredients came together.

The new photoshelter slideshows are great as they can be used now on your Facebook page. I also prefer the bigger button that highlights in red. The ability to also embed a single image is also useful. This feature was around before. I will be adding sinle images from my archive also with this feature in the coming weeks.

A Robosaurus sets a car on fire

A Robosaurus standing 12 metres tall lifts a car and roasts it with a jet of flaming breath and then rips it to pieces with its crushing claws and stainless steel teeth.

This was a great photographic opportunity and positioning was key hear to getting the most dramatic shots. It took place in the Sydney Olympic Stadium as part of the Easter Show each year in Sydney. Having the crowds behind and above on the walkway gives a good perspective of how tall this monster robot is.

The power of black & white photography & Aperture

Walking through Hyde Park the other day, I noticed that the tree formation from above would make a great picture. The real strength though in the image was converting it to black & white and Apples Aperture handled it perfectly. I used the yellow filter after I had converted the image to monochrome. The other advantage with aperture black & white conversions is the image retains full RGB. This was all good timing as I noticed on Apples homepage http://www.apple.com/startpage/ that the National Press Photographers Association is holding its annual Best of Photojournalism awards this week and Aperture is playing a big role.

A recent assignment I covered was the Spencer Tunick project at the Opera House where 5000 naked volunteers took part. The light was perfect, ideal for such an amazing event. The Opera House has been photographed numerous times but never seen like this before.

Have just come across Jack's blog http://jack.bigfolioblog.com A great inspiration and resource. I commented on Jack's blog about the fact that as he says there is a disproportionate emphasis on post production rather than image capture. My comments are in agreement and this is what I think:- I am from the b&w film days and totally agree that you should aim to get correct composition, lighting and exposure before post production. As I shoot all my images in raw and use aperture for post processing, I rarely need to go into photoshop. In my case this works for me. The inital correct capture regardless of what type of photographer you are will always apply.

Spencer Tunik Mardi Gras Media Conference

Two naked models covered in strategically placed award winning sushi, inspired by a scene from "Sex and the City". This was the photo opportunity at Toko Restaurant, Surry Hills. There were quite a few media outlets covering this event so for me the challenge is always to try and not get anyone else in the frame and to try and produce images that would suggest no one else was there.

The natural light was not great so my best option was to shoot with a slower shutter speed and to bounce the flash into a LumiQuest.

I was particularly drawn to an article in The Guardian about the I Pad as a tool to save newspapers and Steve Jobs beliefs in old media companies and keeping them alive.
Having come from a newspaper background myself as a press photographer in London, I thought that this aspect alone was worthy of mention.

My response was : having come from a an editorial background myself and having a photojournalist father [Bill Lovelace] who one minute would be covering a war to the next minute shooting a portrait of a celebrity, photo-snobbery never became a part of my upbringing. The secret to being a good photographer is the ability to adapt to whatever situation you are shooting and mood you are trying to create with the same dedication regardless of the nature of the subject.

Prince William's Sydney Visit

Very pleased that I applied for media accreditation to cover Prince William's historic visit to Sydney.
Apart from the photographic agency that I was shooting for, I am pleased to have a nice set of images for my archive. I covered Prince William's arrival at Sydney airport and Prince William's visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens for a BBQ luncheon. There were some great photographic opportunities. One in particular was when the Prince and the Premier of NSW were greeted by some indigenous dancers. Here is one of them.

I recently came across the candid frame photography

I listened to a podcast by Jay Maisel where the main components of photography are discussed such as light, gesture and colour.
However what is of particular interest to me is Jay's discussion of the role of gesture in photography. He says that Its easy to see the gesture in people yet we are quite often not aware that gesture exhists in a city, building or a tree. Jay recites a great quote from Robert Doisneau - " I find the stage and the players will come". I also love the way Jay describes himself as a hit and run shooter.
Well worth listening to.

Canon G11 Video Review

Just got the Canon G11 and I am extremely impressed with the image quality and handling. In terms of the Canon G11 video there is a great review on GIZMODO .The article states "It is limited to 640X480 resolution. However the video the G11 produces is generally excellent just compare it to the video-shootin' iPod nano). That's because it's packed with data—the bitrate averages around 10Mbps, which is more than the Flip Mino HD, at 9Mbps for 720p video. That's why it looks so vibrant compared to a lot of the 720p video out there. Sure, 720p out of this would be nice, but I'd take VGA video that looks great over HD video that looks like crap".
Well thats good to know as I could find no info on this in the G11 users manuel.

Photoshelter introduce Facebook export feature

It is great to see that Photoshelter has introduced a Facebook export feature that allows users to either send their images to a facebook album, or post a link on their wall. Well now they have announced that you can also post to the pages of which you are a fan. This to me is a great marketing tool which I have to make the time to explore.
On another note what is going on with the weather in Sydney. On monday I was on location shooting a new TV drama with temperatures reaching 37º C and the rest of the week I have been wishing that I brought a jacket with me.

Sydney Dust Storm

I took this photograph at the North Sydney Olympic pool and the dust gave a very strong exagerated sepia tone to the image. The red dust was blown in from the Australian Desert Outback and clogged the skies over Australia's largest city. Such thick red dust is a rarity over Sydney, making it a great opportunity to photograph. I used my Canon 1 D Mark 11 which has never let me down over the years, very tightly sealed so no dust problems.

David Copperfield Oz Tour

David Copperfield had a press conference for his first Australian tour in 10 years. The photo opportunity started off with just portraits of David until he gave a demonstration and picked up

GI Joe Press Conference, Walsh Bay, Sydney

I have chosen this picture of Sienna Miller which I shot last week as a perfect example of fill in flash when you are not in control of the lighting. Because this was a press conference photo call
the publicist had arranged with all the photographers that Sienna Miller would pose in this exact spot when she arrived. Without fill in flash there would have been shadows under Sienna's eyes and in fact I would not have considered submitting such an image to a client.

Bruno movie premiere, Sydney.

I covered this event for a corporate events client. It was like something out of the hollywood movies with all the media surrounding Bruno to get their pictures & interviews. Such a well orchestrated event I must take my hat off to UPI for organizing it all so well .
